🏘️ Newport News Approves $2.3M for Homes, Homebuyers and Local Programs

Newport News City Council approved $2.3 million in federal funding that will reach neighborhoods across the city. That includes $600,000 for single-family home repairs, $200,000 to help first-time buyers with down payments and closing costs, $100,000 to tear down unsafe buildings and $100,000 for small-business loans and grants tied to new jobs. Money will also support local shelters, after-school programs, Meals on Wheels and services for people experiencing homelessness. Last year, similar funding helped repair 25 homes, assist more than 3,000 people experiencing homelessness or with special needs and serve 5,000+ youth and seniors. 🦞 Newport News Gets Its First Look at a New Waterfront Seafood Market 

The East End waterfront could soon have a whole new reason to visit. Plans for the Newport News Seafood Market at the Seafood Industrial Park show a fresh seafood counter, raw bar, prepared food vendors, beverage bar and space for local entrepreneurs. Outside, the vision includes gathering plazas, live music, pop-up markets, a boardwalk along the working waterfront and public boat access. The design also gives a nod to Newport News’ long maritime and industrial history while turning the area into a place where people can eat, shop and spend a little time by the water. There is no opening date yet, but if the finished market looks anything like these plans, the East End may be getting one of the city’s most interesting new gathering spots.

🏈 CNU and Apprentice Are Bringing a Crosstown Football Showdown Back to Newport News

Newport News has two college football teams just a few miles apart, and on Saturday, September 5, they are finally getting a rivalry game with a name. The Christopher Newport Captains and Apprentice School Builders will meet at TowneBank Stadium at 7 p.m. for the first Anchor Bowl. The last time these two met was in 2022, when Apprentice pulled out a wild 38- 35 win, so there is already a little history waiting for round two. The fun starts early with an Anchor Bowl Kickoff Luncheon on August 27 at CNU, featuring former NFL quarterback Aaron Brooks, plus community service and alumni events leading up to game day. The Frosty Feat 5K is coming to Newport News on Saturday, December 12, at Copeland Field across from Warwick High School. The family-friendly event is sponsored by the Newport News Public Schools Wellness Program and includes a 5K at 9 a.m. and a 1-mile fun run at 8:30 a.m. Registration is $20 for the 5K and $5 for the fun run, with prices increasing after November 11. 🏨 One of Marriott’s Newest Hotel Brands Just Opened in Newport News

Newport News has a new place to put up visiting family, friends and business travelers. Owned and operated by the Patel family, the new 75-room City Express by Marriott at 12359 Hornsby Lane brings one of the brand’s first U.S. locations to the city. The project represents about a $2 million investment in the Central District and includes free breakfast, high-speed WiFi and ADA accessible rooms. The Newport News Economic Development Authority helped support the project as it moved forward. For locals, it is another sign of new investment along the city’s busy central corridor, and one more option when somebody texts, “Where should I stay when I come to town?”
