Hair salon relocation in Newport News Viginia
Updates for Shear Designers Newport News and Oyster Point business district

The hair salon relocation for Shear Designers Newport News has stirred up mixed feelings among loyal clients and longtime residents of the Oyster Point business district.

After more than three decades in the same spot, Shear Designers found itself at a crossroads when redevelopment loomed at the corner of Thimble Shoals Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue.

Vera Hall, the salon's owner, was faced with the tough task of not only clearing out by her lease’s end but also comforting clients who felt the move marked the end of an era.

For many regulars, the change feels personal and deeply unsettling.

The new space, shared with The Clipper just a block away, is a reflection of the area's rapid transformation as local real estate developers continue to invest in updated retail and office spaces.

Even as the team at Shear Designers has become smaller due to retirements, Hall is determined to keep her business running under its own license, promising continuity where possible.

The bittersweet move comes with sacrifices—smaller quarters and higher rent in the proposed alternative left Hall no choice but to decline the developer’s offer.

Yet despite frustration and nostalgia, Hall’s commitment to her clients isn’t wavering.

Many see this relocation as a symbol of ongoing shifts in Oyster Point, where new restaurants and developments are springing up, attracting both newcomers and longtime locals seeking the familiar touch of a trusted stylist.

Shear Designers will continue serving the Newport News community, just as Hall and her mother did for years, maintaining the warm, personal atmosphere that defined their shop.

higher rent for a smaller place? That’s rough. Wish the developers cared more

Moving sucks but at least they’re staying close. I’ll follow wherever Ms. Hall goes!

I’m sad about this. That spot always felt like home. Hope Vera keeps going strong!
