AUKUS submarine program in Newport News, Virginia |
SSN-AUKUS submarine and nuclear submarine design |

In Newport News, the AUKUS submarine program is becoming more than a distant defense pact: it is engineering work on the waterfront.
The U.S. Navy awarded Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, a $56 million contract for engineering and design support.
The assignment includes work tied to the SSN-AUKUS submarine, a nuclear-powered vessel being developed through cooperation among the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
If an option is exercised, the contract’s value could reach $91 million, allowing for additional work.
For a city shaped by shipbuilding, the stakes reach beyond a single contract to the skills needed for complicated naval construction.
This nuclear submarine design work calls for specialized engineering expertise, but the award does not specify new local hiring or a construction schedule.
HII is also helping develop workers and qualify suppliers in Australia, extending the program’s industrial reach beyond Hampton Roads.
The partnership connects local design efforts with a broader push to build submarine capacity across three countries.
Still, ambition is not the same as delivery, and turning designs into operational submarines will take sustained coordination.
For Newport News, the immediate story is clear: its shipyard has a formal role in a long-running international defense project. |

Proud to see the shipyard involved! My dad worked there!
