Newport News City Council unanimously approved more than $2.3 million in federal housing and community development funding on August 11, and there’s a little bit of everything in the plan.

Fixing Homes: The biggest piece is $600,000 for single-family home repairs through the Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Another $100,000 will support low-interest loans for owner-occupied home repairs, $300,500 will help develop affordable housing and $155,077 will go toward rehabilitating multi-family rental housing.

Helping First-Time Buyers: $200,000 is set aside for down payment and closing cost assistance for first-time homebuyers across Newport News, with about nine households expected to receive help.

Helping Families: Funding includes $40,000 for Transitions Family Violence Services, $28,170 for LINK of Hampton Roads' winter shelter, $20,000 for Freedom Outreach Center and $10,000 for Menchville House Ministries.

Youth & Seniors: The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula gets $50,000 for after-school programs, Peninsula Agency on Aging gets $15,000 for Meals on Wheels and House of Refuge Worship Center gets $5,000 for youth programs.

Cleaning Up & Creating Jobs: The city is putting $100,000 toward demolishing unsafe structures in the Southeast Community and another $100,000 toward loans and grants for businesses that create jobs for low- and moderate-income residents.

Last year, similar funding helped repair 25 homes, assisted more than 3,000 people experiencing homelessness or with special needs, and supported programs serving 5,000+ youth and seniors. The new plan now heads to HUD for review.
