What popular shopping and restaurant district features a fountain and holiday tree lighting every year?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

❄️ Don’t Let Your HVAC Give You the Cold Shoulder

Your HVAC’s been grinding all summer, and now it’s begging for a bit of love. A quick tune-up now beats a chilly surprise later. Dran’s Heating & Air keeps Hampton Roads homes cozy, quiet, and running smoothly through fall and winter.

📞 Call 757-975-8355 or visit dranshvac.com  to schedule your seasonal check today.

💳Shop Small Business Saturday

If you are wondering where the good Small Business Saturday stops are, here are the places to go in Newport News.

Chef’s Market Food Hall

The Twisted Rose Consignment Boutique

Patrick Henry Mall Holiday Vendor Show

Act II Consignment Boutique LLC

I plan to check out every one of these spots after I recover from today’s turkey plate. It feels like the right kind of post-meal workout, and it gives me a chance to see what our local vendors are offering. Small Business Saturday always brings out ideas and products you cannot find in the big stores. If you want your dollars to stay local and support the people who live and work right here in Newport News, these stops make it easy.

The Navy picked up the USS Massachusetts, an 8,000-ton Virginia-class sub built by Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding. It is number twenty-five in the line and packed with Block IV upgrades that keep it out at sea longer. The crew gets a reconfigurable torpedo room, a diver lockout trunk, and photonics masts instead of the old scopes. Sheryl Sandberg christened it last year. Commissioning hits in 2026. Big win for the yard.

⚠️That “Dominion” Call Might Not Be Dominion

I’ve heard a few neighbors mention weird calls lately, so here’s a quick heads up. Dominion Energy wants us to stay sharp this season. Scammers love the holidays, and they get creative, so look for the red flags. No real rep demands gift cards, surprise payments, or threatens a cut-off. Hang up, check your account, and report anything sketchy. Stay safe out there.

🏈Barry Brings Home the Big One

Congratulations to Connor Barry, who grabbed NJAC Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Captains through a perfect 10-0 season. He threw a school-record 34 touchdowns, only three picks and kept the offense rolling every week. The conference also gave Coaching Staff of the Year to Paul Crowley and his crew, which feels right after a season like that. Big moment for CNU, big grin for Newport News.

Your undefeated Captains are staying home for round two of the NCAA football championships. TowneBank Stadium gets loud on Saturday, November 29, at noon, and this one should be a good one. Tickets and details at cnusports.com.

The Newport News Retired Teachers Association meets four times a year. That’s the agenda. What really happens? Scholarships get funded. Names get remembered. Stories get passed around like mints. These are folks who spent decades teaching here and somehow still haven’t left. No headlines. No speeches. Just quiet loyalty to a city and its kids. That’s the whole thing.

🍪Williamsburg-style ginger cookies

These aren’t your average ginger snaps. Williamsburg-style ginger cookies are soft, rich with molasses, and packed with warm spice that tastes like December. They’ve got that perfect crackled top and just enough chew to keep you coming back. Bake a batch, share a few, hide the rest. No judgment.
