๐Ÿฆ€ Seafood Market Construction Timeline Shifts

The Gist: Newport News’ long-planned seafood market is now expected to begin construction in late 2026 or early 2027. The project is part of the city’s effort to revitalize the East End and strengthen the Seafood Industrial Park. The market is planned as a 7,600-square-foot, multi-vendor space with fresh seafood, prepared food stalls, a raw bar, a full-service bar, seating, a commercial kitchen, and office space.

Why It Matters: This project could bring a new waterfront destination to Newport News while supporting local seafood businesses and East End redevelopment. The later timeline means residents will be waiting longer, but the city says the market is still moving forward.

โœˆ๏ธ Newport News Airport Gets New State Funding

The Gist: Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport is getting more than $500,000 for maintenance and repair projects as part of nearly $40 million in new state aviation investments across Virginia. Norfolk International Airport is also receiving more than $7 million for a new de-icing ramp.

Why It Matters: PHF has been trying to redefine its future after losing regular commercial airline service. This funding is another piece of the airport’s bigger shift toward repairs, aviation innovation, cargo, advanced air mobility, and new economic development opportunities.

The Gist: VDOT is starting Phase 1 of a new I-64 interchange at Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News. The first phase will add westbound I-64 on- and off-ramps, widen part of I-64 west, add a new traffic signal at the ramp intersection, and improve nearby Denbigh Boulevard connections at Warwick Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue.

Why It Matters: This will give drivers another way on and off I-64 between Fort Eustis Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue. VDOT says the project is meant to improve safety, reduce congestion, and expand access in the local area.
