❄️Winter Carnival Cancelled in Newport News Due to Extreme Cold

Quick heads up, neighbors. The Winter Carnival scheduled for Friday, Feb. 7, is cancelled. I hate sharing it, honestly. The cold is coming in hard, with temps dropping into the teens and wind chills near single digits. That makes it tough to keep everyone safe and comfortable. I know a lot of folks were looking forward to this. Updates on the Re-Up School Supply Drive will be shared once details are posted. Stay warm out there.

🌸Chesapeake Chuck Predicts Early Spring for Hampton Roads

Chesapeake Chuck spoke, and Hampton Roads listened. No shadow at the Virginia Living Museum means an early spring is officially on the table. I am not arguing with a well-fed local rodent.

Punxsutawney Phil went the other direction. More winter, apparently. Chuck stayed coastal and made a different call. That matters around here.

🚌Free Rides Across Hampton Roads on Transit Equity Day

Keep your wallet in your pocket this Monday, Feb 10th, which is Transit Equity Day, and Hampton Roads Transit is offering free rides across the system. That means buses, light rail, ferries, OnDemand, and Paratransit. No fare box, no math, just hop on.

The day honors Rosa Parks, born Feb. 4. You’ll notice bus headlights on all day as a quiet nod to her legacy, plus a front seat reserved in her name. Skip traffic, save some gas, and ride easy around the 757.

High mileage drivers, quick heads up. High Mileage Week runs February 23–27, and it can lower your personal property tax bill. More miles mean less value. Less value means less tax. That part is nice.

Paperwork matters. No dashboard photos. Think inspection records, oil changes, and repair receipts. The deadline is February 28.

For eligibility details and to apply online, visit the Commissioner of the Revenue website.

Drive Safe Hampton Roads is running its annual Child Safety Seat Round-up all February. Expired or beat-up seats are a real risk in a crash, so this gets them off the road. You get $5 per seat, up to two. Drop-offs are happening at select Walmart Supercenters and AAA offices, with help from CHKD and Huffman & Huffman. Safer kids, cleaner garage, small win all around.

Opened in 2022 by local Chef Kenny Sloane, Steak & Tonic was built for couples who like their date nights with a little edge. Yes, you can order classic steakhouse favorites, but this is also the place known for adventurous meats like elk, ostrich, or wagyu when available. The menu changes often, which makes every visit feel like its own event. The room is intimate, the cocktails set the tone fast, and the vibe feels special without being stiff. Perfect for a Valentine’s dinner that actually gives you something to talk about.
