Meet SherriAnn Harris, Army Veteran and founder of Craft 2 You LLC. What started as a creative space for children with different abilities has grown into a welcoming community for all ages.

 

Through sewing and hands-on crafts, participants build confidence, strengthen skills, and connect with others in a supportive environment. SherriAnn blends her mental health background, military discipline, and love of crafting as a proud “Therapeutic Craft Professional.”

Mayor Phillip Jones has ordered all Newport News city flags lowered to half-staff in honor of Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr., the longtime civil rights leader. Flags at City Hall and all city-owned buildings will fly at half-staff from sunrise Sunday, March 1, 2026, through sunset Saturday, March 7, 2026.

 

Jackson’s wife, Jacqueline, is a Newport News native and Huntington High School graduate, giving this moment a personal tie to our city.

🚓 Newport News Senior Citizen Police Academy Now Accepting Applications

It’s that time again. Newport News Police is opening its Citizen Police Academy just for seniors, and it’s a great way to get a real look at how things work.

 

The eight-week spring session runs April 14 through June 2, 2026, on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon at the Denbigh Community Center, 15198 Warwick Blvd. It’s offered twice a year, fall and spring, and needs at least 15 participants.

 

You’ll cover fraud and scams, personal safety, K-9 units, traffic stops, and more of the day-to-day work officers handle. Call 757-975-5100 or email govd@nnva.gov by March 24. sign up here.

🥦 Free Healthy Cooking Classes in Newport News

The Virginia Family Nutrition Program is offering free classes to help families cook healthy, budget-friendly meals. Sessions meet Tuesdays at 12 p.m. in March or 10:30 a.m. in April at 739 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Suite 1009, and participants receive a free cooking kit.
