Newport News is getting ready to try something new. The city’s Drones as First Responders program would send drones to certain emergency calls before crews arrive. That could help fire and police teams get a faster look at what is going on and make better decisions sooner. The city also says the drones are not for regular neighborhood surveillance, and each flight is tied to a specific call. Read More... |
Newport News is joining communities across the country for National Youth Violence Prevention Week, and locally it will be called Momentum for Peace Week. The city says the week will run from April 27 through May 2 and will focus on peacebuilding, emotional wellness, and helping young people and families connect through positive events. A fine black dust is showing up on homes and cars in parts of Newport News, and neighbors want answers. Residents say it has become a constant mess and a growing worry for their health.
Now local leaders, community members, and researchers are looking for solutions. A recent symposium at CNU focused on next steps, including air monitors near coal facilities to gather data that residents hope will lead to real action.

Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival Returns to Newport News
The 28th Annual Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival is bringing concerts, exhibits, jazz celebrations, and special community events to Newport News all month long. Highlights include a Victor Haskins concert on April 17, an Ella celebration at Ironclad Distillery on April 18, and an Emma Nissen concert on April 24, along with more events at Downing-Gross, CNU, and the Ferguson Center. |
