City Council heard from neighbors doing the quiet, hard work of keeping other neighbors safe. Mentors, parents, and young people asked the City to commit 2% of the general fund to prevention programs as short-term federal grants run out. The moment hit home when Vice Mayor Curtis Bethany said programs like these might have saved his younger brother’s life.

Newport News Shipbuilding marked 140 years of service to the nation this week. What began in 1886 with a single dry dock and a tugboat named Dorothy has grown into a 550-acre shipyard along the James River, employing 26,000 people and delivering more than 800 ships. Today, the yard builds nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy, with operations expanding beyond Virginia. Around here, that legacy is not just history. It is family.

Newport News is getting a new tech lead, and this one is focused on the everyday stuff. The city has named Hassan Janjua as its first Chief Information Officer, a role centered on making city services easier to use and more secure. Starting in February, Janjua brings more than 24 years of public-sector IT experience, including leading systems for over 100,000 users in Los Angeles County. With major projects underway, including new Navy housing and workforce training centers, his goal is simple: city technology that works quietly in the background as Newport News continues to grow.

A family day home at 192 Colony Road was approved to expand care for up to eight children, helping address local childcare needs.
New Opioid Prevention Funding
The City accepted $360,000 for Operation STOP!, supporting emergency housing, transportation, and harm-reduction resources to combat overdose rates.
Collective Bargaining Update
Following advocacy from the Newport News Education Association, Councilman Long confirmed an ordinance is currently being developed by the Finance and Government Performance Committee.

Fin Seafood

If you want a date night that feels like a real occasion, Fin Seafood is the heavyweight champion of fine dining in Newport News. This is chef-driven, white-tablecloth dining that’s perfect for leveling up from a casual night out.

The vibe: Sleek, modern, and quietly romantic. Low lighting, unhurried service, and an open kitchen that adds a little dinner-and-a-show energy.

What to order: The tasting menus (5 or 8 courses) are the move if you want to go all out. The tuna tartare is legendary, and the surf-and-turf options bring high-end cuts and seafood together beautifully.

Why now: Late January is the sweet spot before the Valentine’s rush. Reservations are easier, and Port Warwick’s lit-up square makes for a crisp post-dinner walk.
