🥫 Big need. ⚓ Big splash. 🚌 Big changes.

THRIVE Peninsula is in crunch mode. Last week, they received 519 requests for food assistance, more than double their usual volume. Add in furloughed workers wondering how they’ll cover rent and groceries, and it’s a lot.
Between federal furloughs, contractor layoffs, delayed EBT benefits, and inflation, local families are getting hit from every side. The THRIVE crew met this week to figure out how to stretch resources, but they can’t do it alone.
Here’s where we come in. They need cereal, canned fruit, tuna, greens, spaghetti, and sauce. Please drop off donations at THRIVE Peninsula or shop their Amazon list.
Every can counts. Let’s keep our neighbors fed and hope flowing. Read More... |
⚓ Shipyard Flats Makes Waves Downtown |
Hey Newport News, your local scoopster here. Big cheers to everyone from City Hall to Capitol Hill who showed up for the ribbon-cutting at Shipyard Flats. The $24.5 million project turned a 1947 shipyard building at 2800 Washington Avenue into 91 new apartments and shop space downtown.
Thanks to Virginia’s Monument Companies, the 81,000-square-foot spot now rocks granite counters, stainless steel appliances, and parking that won’t make you crazy. Rents start at $1,299. Historic tax credits saved the charm and boosted the city’s tax base.
Feels like the City of Newport News is sailing full speed ahead.

🚌 NNPS Tackles Buses, Boundaries, and Big Questions |
Last week, Newport News Public Schools met with parents at Hines Middle to talk transportation, zoning, and those ever-popular Magnet and Specialty Programs. Missed it? The replay’s online, and you can drop your two cents in the online survey (English or Spanish) through noon on October 29.
Chief Operations Officer Rusty Fairheart didn’t sugarcoat things. Between driver shortages, long routes, and a decades-old desegregation plan, buses have their hands full. But recent tweaks like adjusted bell times and fewer stops saved more than 4,000 miles a day.
NNPS wants feedback before next year’s changes roll out. So if your kid’s bus stop feels like a mini road trip, speak up.

If you love vinyl, nostalgia, or discovering local gems, Vinny's Vinyl in Newport News is your spot. Opened in 2024 by Newport News native Vinny, this retro-style record shop reminds you of when music was something you held, not just streamed.
Vinny grew up working in record shops until they faded out. Now he’s brought that world back with well-loved records, new releases and the kind of atmosphere where browsing turns into conversation.
“Regardless of any differences we have, we can always find common ground in music,” he says. And it shows. People don’t just shop here, they connect.

🍎 Virginia Apple Pudding |
If fall had a flavor, this would be it. Virginia Apple Pudding is one of those old-fashioned desserts that makes the whole house smell like cinnamon and comfort. It’s not really pudding, more like a buttery, soft cake hugging layers of cinnamon-kissed apples that melt into sweet perfection.
