🚧 Industrial Park Road Closing Tuesday Morning

Heads up, Newport News drivers: Industrial Park Road will be fully closed starting Tuesday, August 4 at 6 a.m. while CSX Transportation makes emergency repairs to the railroad crossing. The road is expected to reopen Wednesday, August 5 at 6 a.m. No vehicles will be able to cross the tracks during the closure. 🛍️ Virginia’s Tax-Free Weekend Is August 7–9

Virginia’s annual Sales Tax Holiday runs Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9, giving Newport News shoppers a chance to save in stores and online. School supplies priced at $20 or less per item and clothing or footwear priced at $100 or less per item are tax-free, just in time for back-to-school shopping. Hurricane prep items also qualify, including portable generators up to $1,000, gas-powered chainsaws up to $350, and select emergency supplies up to $60. ENERGY STAR and WaterSense products priced at $2,500 or less are included too. Check the Virginia Department of Taxation website for the full list before you shop.

The Frosty Feat 5K is coming to Newport News on Saturday, December 12, at Copeland Field across from Warwick High School. 🚴 He Grew Up In Newport News, Then Rode 600 Miles To Help Moms In Crisis

Patrick Nelson grew up attending St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News. He is now a student at Oklahoma State University, but this summer he found a way to support people back home from several states away.

Nelson joined Biking for Babies, a national mission where cyclists ride long-distance routes to raise money for pregnancy resource centers. He completed the Oklahoma route, riding nearly 600 miles from Oklahoma City to St. Louis, and raised nearly $2,000 for Care Net Peninsula in Newport News.

Care Net Peninsula provides counseling, medical care, and social services to women facing crisis pregnancies on the Peninsula. For a student living far from home, Nelson’s effort still pointed right back to Newport News.
