⚓ HII Lands Massive Submarine Contract Work

HII says Newport News Shipbuilding is part of a U.S. Navy contract package worth about $76.6 billion for more Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines. The work includes five additional Columbia-class submarines, nine additional Virginia-class submarines, and funding for shipyard infrastructure. Newport News Shipbuilding will serve as the delivery yard for six Virginia-class subs and build major module sections for the Columbia-class program. 🥫 She Collected Over 8,000 Pounds Of Food And Wanted To Give Even More

Five years ago, Sylvia Woods started an annual Independence Day food drive for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. What began with her circle of friends has grown into something much bigger. Over the years, Woods has helped collect 8,242 pounds of food for neighbors across the Peninsula.

This week, News 3 surprised her with an Everyday Hero award, and Southern Bank gave her a $425 gift card as part of the recognition. Even then, Woods’ first instinct was to ask whether the gift card could go back to the food bank.

Her friend Randal Richardson, who has helped with the drive, nominated her for the honor because he wanted more people to know about the work she has been doing. Woods says her motivation comes from knowing that not everyone has a strong circle of support when times get hard.

Newport News has a lot of people doing quiet, powerful work. Sylvia Woods is one of them.
