Newport News is part of a $3 million federal storm study looking at coastal flooding risks across the Virginia Peninsula, and the early takeaway is not exactly comforting. The study says the region could see more than $10 billion in storm damage between 2040 and 2090 if nothing changes. But here’s the catch: the current plan only looks at smaller fixes, like raising individual homes, instead of bigger protections like levees or tidal gates. Even researchers said that may not be realistic, especially with the cost, the amount of work needed, and the limited number of contractors available.
