🌞Good morning, Newport News! We all head into a new year with resolutions. One of mine is simple. Keep showing up and keep bringing you the best local stories I can, week after week.
No big speeches today. Just a quiet reset and a steady start to 2026. Thanks for reading and caring about what’s happening in this city. Here’s to good people and small wins close to home.
Alright, let’s get into it.

Okay, can we talk about the Jefferson Plaza Costco parking lot? If you’ve ever circled that place like a vulture, good news. Costco just dropped $28 million on the old Ferguson HQ at Jefferson and Bland.
The new store will be 163,000 sq. ft. with 800 parking spots, plus $3.25 million in city road upgrades. Demolition has started, so yes, your bulk shopping future might actually get less stressful. Read More... |
🥪The $1 Partnership: From Counter to Owner |
There’s a feel-good story brewing near CNU. Jennifer Gates started working at the Subway Station back in 1989 and never really left. After 36 years of loyalty, including running the shop while owner Tom Pitkin battled cancer, she’s officially becoming a partner. The buy-in? A single dollar. Jennifer now has the keys, the title, and the long-guarded secret sauce recipe. Same subs, same spot, just a new chapter earned the right way.

As 2026 rolls in, plenty of Newport News locals are locking in fresh fitness goals. The city has no shortage of places to get after it, from community-driven spots like Guerrilla Athletics and DScottsFitCamp, to strength-focused gyms like American Iron Barbell Club and The Iron Asylum Gym. Add in approachable options like Total Fitness and inclusive training at Uncharted Adaptive Fitness, and there’s no shortage of ways to start strong. Read More... |
🌀 The Ceiling Fan Trick Most People Miss |
Did you know your ceiling fan has a winter mode? Most fans have a small switch on the motor housing that reverses the blade direction. In colder months, set it to spin clockwise at a low speed. It pushes warm air back down without creating a breeze, helping rooms feel warmer and maybe saving a little on the heat bill. Small switch, real difference. |

🍽️Southern Black Eyed Peas with Stewed Tomatoes |
Recipe by Mama J's I’m so glad I found this black-eyed peas recipe. It’s the same way my grandmother and my mom used to make them when I was growing up in Williamsburg. It’s a New Year’s Day tradition tied to good luck and prosperity, but add some greens and cornbread and I’ll eat it any time of year.
