New facility aims to bolster local workforce and community revitalization |
Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) has commenced construction on the Newport News Trades Center, a 16,000-square-foot facility located at 520 21st Street in Newport News.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on August 12, 2025, marks a significant step in VPCC's commitment to expanding workforce training opportunities in the region.
Designed to prepare over 400 students annually, the center will offer hands-on programs in welding, marine electrical, structural fitting, coatings, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and facilities maintenance.
Todd Estes, VPCC's Vice President for Workforce Development and Innovation, emphasized the center's role in meeting evolving talent needs and supporting national defense readiness.
He highlighted the strategic location's potential to revitalize the community by connecting residents with career training opportunities.
The project is a collaborative effort between VPCC, the Maritime Industrial Base, and the City of Newport News.
Funding includes a $457,000 Advanced Manufacturing Talent Investment Program grant received in 2024, which will equip the facility's 20-booth welding lab with cutting-edge equipment.
Additional funds from the FY25 and FY26 Workforce Pipeline will outfit labs, including a realistic multi-trade maritime mock-up for true-to-life training environments.
Construction is managed by WM Jordan, with design by RRMM Architects.
The $9 million project is slated for completion in January 2026.
Estes expressed gratitude to the City of Newport News, industry partners, and the Commonwealth for their collaboration and shared vision, underscoring the project's potential to strengthen the community and support the Navy's shipbuilding goals.
In related developments, Newport News has been actively engaging residents in shaping the city's future through the "Plan Together" workshops, focusing on updating the city's comprehensive plan.
Additionally, the city celebrated a major milestone with the ribbon-cutting at Legacy Landing, a transformative mixed-income housing development in the Southeast Community.
These initiatives reflect Newport News' commitment to community revitalization and economic development. |
