Latest Addition to U.S. Navy Fleet Enters Final Outfitting Phase |
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Virginia-class submarine Arkansas (SSN 800) has been successfully launched into the James River by HII's Newport News Shipbuilding division.
Shipbuilders meticulously transferred the submarine from its construction facility to a floating dry dock, where it was submerged and guided by tugboats to a submarine pier for final outfitting, testing, and crew certification.
Bryan Caccavale, vice president of Navy programs at Newport News Shipbuilding, emphasized the company's dedication to enhancing submarine production rates for the U.S. Navy. He stated, "Nuclear-powered submarines are critical to our national security, and we’re proud to see Arkansas in the water."
The submarine's sponsors are the six women of the historic Little Rock Nine, who were the first African American students to attend the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, during desegregation.
Arkansas is the 27th Virginia-class submarine and the 13th delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding. These advanced submarines offer increased firepower, maneuverability, and stealth capabilities.
In related community developments, Newport News has been actively engaging residents in shaping the city's future. The city council recently reviewed the Strategic Housing Initiatives Plan (SHIP), a comprehensive roadmap aimed at addressing housing needs and affordability through 2050. This plan outlines strategies for housing policy reform, production, redevelopment, and neighborhood stability.
Additionally, the city has been updating its Comprehensive Plan, inviting residents to participate in workshops to provide feedback on city goals and priorities. These efforts aim to ensure that Newport News continues to grow and thrive in alignment with the community's vision.
Furthermore, Newport News has been enhancing its infrastructure and community services. The city council approved a $710 million capital improvement plan, which includes renovations to Warwick High School, development of the Seafood Industrial Park, and improvements to citywide athletic facilities. These initiatives reflect the city's commitment to fostering a vibrant and sustainable community.
As Newport News continues to evolve, the successful launch of the Arkansas submarine underscores the city's pivotal role in national defense and its ongoing dedication to progress and innovation. |
