Newport News is working to grow more trees across the city as part of a new urban forestry effort aimed at creating a greener, more resilient community.
The city was recently selected for the Community Forestry Revitalization Program through the Virginia Department of Forestry. Instead of direct funding, the grant provides professional planning support from the Green Infrastructure Center, a nonprofit known for helping communities strengthen their tree programs.
Over the next two years, the partnership will help Newport News develop a comprehensive urban forestry plan. That work includes mapping the city’s tree canopy, analyzing environmental benefits, reviewing local policies, and identifying areas where new trees can be planted.
The goal is to create a long-term strategy to expand tree coverage, build partnerships, and improve the city’s chances of securing future grants for tree planting and replacement.
Since October, an advisory committee made up of city staff and community partners has been meeting monthly to guide the effort. The group includes representatives from The Mariners’ Museum and Park, Christopher Newport University, The Green Foundation, the Virginia Department of Forestry, and the Peninsula Master Naturalists.
The initiative has been named “Rooted Together,” highlighting the collaboration between the city and the community.
Some progress is already underway. Updated tree canopy maps have been completed, potential planting areas have been identified, and several tree giveaways are planned this spring.
