Traffic Split Scheduled for I-64 East at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard |
Drivers should watch for a closed middle lane and new traffic setup on I-64 east, starting as early as Aug. 18 |
Starting as early as overnight on Aug. 18, VDOT crews will close the center lane of I-64 east at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard (exit 258). That will drop the eastbound lanes from four to three. A similar traffic shift was set up on the westbound side last week.
Drivers will have to split around the work zone, either through the two inside left lanes or the one outside right lane. If you need exits 258A or 258B, make sure you’re in the right lane. All other eastbound traffic can use any of the three open lanes.
To set this up, the on-ramp from southbound J. Clyde Morris to I-64 east will shut down overnight, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting Aug. 18. A signed detour will be in place.
Expect this setup to remain in place through fall 2025. It’s part of phase two of bridge work tied to the Hampton Roads Express Lanes project. Translation: this is going to be with us for a while.
Remember, work zones aren’t NASCAR tracks. Slow down, follow the signs, and keep your eyes off the phone.

About the Hampton Roads Express Lanes Project
This Newport News segment runs 11.5 miles on I-64, from LaSalle Avenue in Hampton to just west of Denbigh Boulevard. For most of it, the HOV lane in each direction is becoming an Express Lane, running alongside three regular lanes. Between I-664 and LaSalle, one general lane in each direction will convert, leaving two general lanes.
When it’s done, we’ll be connected to a 45-mile Express Lanes network running to Chesapeake. The idea is simple: cut down congestion and give drivers more options when traffic’s at its worst. |
