Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) has officially opened its new Newport News Trades Center, marking a significant advancement in local workforce development.
The 16,000-square-foot facility, located at 520 21st Street, is designed to train over 400 students annually in high-demand fields such as welding, marine electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and facilities maintenance.
Strategically situated near Newport News Shipbuilding, the center aims to bolster the region's maritime trades workforce.
VPCC's Vice President for Workforce Development and Innovation emphasized the center's role in meeting the evolving talent needs of the area and supporting national defense readiness.
Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones hailed the center as a transformative initiative for the community, highlighting its potential to connect residents with well-paying careers in shipbuilding and advanced manufacturing.
The $9 million project was funded through a partnership between VPCC, the Maritime Industrial Base, and the City of Newport News.
In 2024, VPCC received a $457,000 grant to equip the center's 20-booth welding lab with state-of-the-art technology, enhancing hands-on training opportunities for students.
The Newport News Trades Center stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing workforce demands and revitalizing the local community. |
