Learn about the Newport News library and the Grissom library projects |
Demolition of the long-standing Sherwood Shopping Center in Newport News is set to commence this week, marking the initial phase in constructing the new Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom Library. This $40 million project aims to invigorate the Denbigh area by introducing a modern public library.
The forthcoming library will span approximately 56,230 square feet, significantly expanding from the current 16,635-square-foot facility on Deshazor Drive, which has served the community since 1977. The new building is designed to offer updated technology, enhanced educational resources, and versatile community spaces to accommodate residents of all ages.
City officials have outlined a comprehensive timeline for the project. Following the demolition, construction is slated to begin in May 2026, with completion targeted for summer 2028. This development is part of a broader initiative to stimulate economic growth and revitalize the Denbigh area.
Community reactions have been varied. Some residents welcome the investment and the promise of revitalization, while others express concerns about the project's cost and the impact on existing local businesses. City leaders emphasize that the new library is intended to serve as a cornerstone for future development, aiming to attract complementary retail and services to the area.
The current Grissom Library site, owned by the city, has yet to have a determined future use. Meanwhile, nearby facilities, including the Newport News Police Department Training Academy and North Precinct building, will continue operations without interruption during the construction period.
As the project progresses, city officials plan to keep the community informed and involved, ensuring that the new library meets the evolving needs of Newport News residents. |
