Newport News-Williamsburg Airport Appoints Chris Morello as Executive Director Amid Strategic Shift |
Airport transitions focus to Air Commerce Park under new leadership |
After more than two years without a permanent leader, the Newport News-Williamsburg Airport has appointed Chris Morello as its new executive director.
Morello, 58, brings over two decades of public sector experience, including roles as Isle of Wight County’s director of economic development and assistant director for Newport News’ economic development office.
His appointment comes as the airport embarks on a significant transformation into an Air Commerce Park, aiming to become a hub for innovation and logistics.
In July 2025, the Newport News City Council invested $4 million to support this evolution, reflecting a commitment to reposition the airport for economic growth and high-wage job creation.
Morello expressed enthusiasm about his new role, stating, "I grew up in Newport News, under the airport’s flight path, and stepping into this role is a privilege."
The airport's shift in focus is a response to industry trends like airline consolidation and technological advances, which have presented challenges to traditional commercial air service.
With Morello at the helm, the Newport News-Williamsburg Airport is poised to navigate this strategic transformation, aiming to position itself at the forefront of cutting-edge technology and aviation excellence. |
