Newport News Schools Gear Up for Back-to-School Season |
Essential Updates and Tips for a Smooth Transition |
As the new academic year approaches, Newport News Public Schools are implementing key measures to ensure a safe and efficient return for students and families.
To enhance security, all students are required to use clear backpacks provided by the school division. Additionally, students must wear their school-issued IDs throughout the day, including on campus, buses, and during extracurricular activities. These IDs will be distributed at the start of the school year.
For parents like Sajada Lewis, a mother of nine with six children in the district, establishing routines is crucial. She emphasizes reducing screen time to help her kids mentally prepare for school. Health experts at Riverside Hospital support this approach, recommending limiting screen exposure 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime to improve focus and sleep quality.
Ensuring adequate sleep is vital. Younger students should aim for 10-12 hours per night, while older students need 8-10 hours. Adjusting bedtimes accordingly can facilitate a smoother transition from summer to the school year.
Staying current with immunizations is also essential. Required vaccines for Virginia students include:
TDAP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Whooping Cough)
Hepatitis
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella
Polio
Chickenpox
Meningitis
Human Papillomavirus
These vaccinations help prevent illnesses that could hinder a child's educational experience.
To address back-to-school anxiety, consider the following steps:
Identify situations that may cause anxiety and recognize associated thoughts and emotions.
Assess whether these emotions align with the facts.
Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation.
By following these guidelines, families can foster a positive and productive start to the school year. |
