Newport News Schools Cut Bus Stops, Adjust Schedules Aug. 25 |
With weeks left before school starts, Newport News Public Schools is changing how students get to class and not everyone agrees. |
Starting Monday, Aug. 25, the district will cut bus stops citywide to speed routes and shorten waits. District leaders say driver shortages make these changes necessary. The plan was shaped by reviewing other school systems and studying current routes.
Before, students walked up to 0.4 miles to a stop. Now, preschool and elementary students may walk 0.5 miles. Middle and high school students may walk 0.7 miles. Some families say this means dark, early walks and crowded stops.
Several schools will also change start and end times:
Safety is a major concern. In January, a 17-year-old was shot near a bus stop. Last September, a 15-year-old was killed at a stop.
District leaders urge families to check new routes before school begins. Walk them in daylight so students know the way. Report unsafe conditions to school officials.
The district thanks families for understanding as they work toward a faster, more reliable bus system for all students. |
