Newport News Marks Juneteenth With Community Celebrations

"Join Newport News in Honoring Freedom: Juneteenth Festivities Unite Community"

Juneteenth week is here, and Newport News has a full lineup to celebrate.

The day marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 and is now a time to celebrate Black culture, reflect on history, and come together as a community.

📍 Juneteenth Field Day Fun Fest

Huntington Park, 361 Hornet Circle
11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Games, music, and fellowship for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, adults with autism, and their families.

📍 Unity in the Community Juneteenth Celebration

Harvest Church, 5889 Jefferson Avenue
4 to 8 p.m.
A free community event with live entertainment, children’s activities, and guest speakers.

📍 Juneteenth Freedom Cookout & Splash Day

Park next to Huntington Beach, 361 Hornet Circle
Friday, June 19
Tickets are $10 and include cookout food, drinks, music, games, and water fun. Bring a change of clothes, because the water guns and balloons are part of the fun. Snow cones and popcorn will be available for $2 cash.

📍 20th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival

Victory Landing Park, 50 26th Street
Saturday, June 20, 5 to 10 p.m.
Enjoy live music, DJs, food, vendors, and performances from Day 26, Tobias Cortez, and more.

It’s a full week to celebrate freedom, honor history, and gather with neighbors across Newport News.
