City leaders unveil ambitious plans to boost economic growth and aviation innovation |
Newport News officials have announced a significant $4 million investment aimed at transforming the Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport into a state-of-the-art air commerce park.
Mayor Phillip Jones expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This initiative positions Newport News at the forefront of aviation innovation, aligning with our city's dynamic shipbuilding activities and the evolving landscape of the southeast."
The envisioned air commerce park will offer services in cargo logistics, advanced air mobility, and aircraft manufacturing and assembly.
City leaders emphasized that this development is designed to stimulate economic growth beyond traditional commercial flights, addressing industry shifts such as airline consolidation and technological advancements.
In addition to the city's investment, U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have secured $6 million in federal funding for the Peninsula Airport Commission to reconstruct 6,500 feet of existing taxiways at the airport.
These combined efforts underscore a commitment to revitalizing the airport's infrastructure and expanding its role in the region's economic development.
As Newport News embarks on this transformative journey, the air commerce park is poised to become a hub for innovation, job creation, and sustained economic growth. |
