Highlighting teacher mentorship programs and teacher retention strategies |
In Newport News, Virginia, new teacher support has taken a significant leap forward with the introduction of the New Teacher Institute (NTI). This initiative, bolstered by a substantial $500,000 grant from the Accelerating Change Together (ACT) program, aims to enhance teacher mentorship programs and implement effective teacher retention strategies.
The NTI is a comprehensive two-year program designed to provide new educators with mentorship, training, and community engagement opportunities. Its primary goal is to reduce turnover among novice teachers—those with five years of experience or less by 20%. In its first year, the program achieved remarkable success, decreasing the novice teacher turnover rate from 36% in the 2023–2024 school year to 16% in 2024–2025.
Dr. Michele Mitchell, Superintendent of Newport News Public Schools, expressed gratitude for the support, stating that the ACT Grant funds provide essential training, support, and resources for new educators, enhancing their effectiveness in the classroom and boosting retention.
The NTI's success is further supported by partnerships with local institutions. Christopher Newport University (CNU) has expanded its teaching degree opportunities, offering a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education to address the critical shortage of elementary teachers in the Commonwealth. This program provides a direct route for aspiring teachers to enter the profession, complementing the existing Master of Arts in Teaching program.
Additionally, CNU's partnership with Newport News Public Schools has been fruitful, with many graduates from CNU's Master of Arts in Teaching program receiving job offers from the school district. This collaboration ensures that new teachers are well-prepared and supported as they begin their careers.
Through these concerted efforts, Newport News is setting a precedent in new teacher support, demonstrating that with robust mentorship programs and strategic retention strategies, the educational landscape can be significantly improved. |
