City budget public hearing and operating budget 2027 details for residents

The Newport News City Council is inviting residents to participate in upcoming public hearings regarding the Fiscal Year 2027 Recommended Operating Budget.

The initial hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located at 2400 Washington Avenue.

To accommodate those unable to attend, a second session will be held on Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m. at the Denbigh Community Center, Room 113, at 15198 Warwick Boulevard.

These hearings provide a platform for residents to voice their opinions and engage directly with city officials on budgetary matters.

In addition to the hearings, the city offers interactive tools to enhance public understanding of the budget process.

The Budget Simulation tool allows residents to create their own version of the city's budget by allocating funds across various priorities and adjusting tax rates.

This hands-on approach sheds light on the complexities and trade-offs involved in municipal budgeting.

The Taxpayer Receipts tool provides a personalized estimate of how individual tax dollars are distributed among city services, promoting transparency and informed civic engagement.

Residents are encouraged to utilize these tools, share their feedback, and stay actively involved in shaping the community's future.

Copies of the Recommended Budget, along with all rate and fee ordinances, are available for public inspection at all city public libraries and in the Office of the City Manager at 2400 Washington Avenue.

The Recommended Budget is also accessible online on the city's official website.

Both public hearings will be broadcast live on NNTV (Cox 48/Verizon 19), ensuring broader access for those unable to attend in person.

Engaging in these hearings and utilizing the available resources empowers residents to contribute meaningfully to the fiscal planning and priorities of Newport News.

Active participation ensures that the city's budget reflects the collective needs and aspirations of its community members.
