Menchville Senior Kyla Leggette Headed to Washington

The Menchville senior and School Board rep is one of just two students chosen statewide

This one’s worth a pause and a smile.

Kyla Leggette, a senior at Menchville High School, has been selected for the United States Senate Youth Program. She’ll represent Virginia during the 64th annual Washington Week, happening March 7 to 14 in D.C. Only 2 students in the entire state were chosen. Kyla is one of them.

If that name sounds familiar, it should. She also serves as the student representative to the Newport News School Board. Busy is an understatement.

During the week, Kyla will join Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, along with 104 other student leaders from across the country. They’ll spend the week meeting with national leaders and getting a real look at how government actually works. Not from a textbook. From the inside.

Each delegate also receives a $10,000 college scholarship, which doesn’t hurt.

Around Menchville, Kyla stays busy. Student Council vice president. Health Education Advocacy League and Model U.N. president. Color guard and archery team captain. Morning announcements co-host. She’s also the co-founder of the CHKD Sunflower Junior Circle.

She plans to study public health on a pre-med track, with hopes of becoming an internal medicine doctor.

Newport News showing up again. This time through Kyla.
