HII's Newport News Shipbuilding Delivers 12th Virginia-Class Submarine, Massachusetts (SSN 798), to U.S. Navy

HII's Newport News Shipbuilding division has successfully delivered the Virginia-class fast-attack submarine Massachusetts (SSN 798) to the U.S. Navy.

This marks the 12th Virginia-class submarine delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding and the 25th constructed under the partnership with General Dynamics Electric Boat.

Massachusetts is the fifth Navy vessel to bear the state's name.

Kari Wilkinson, president of Newport News Shipbuilding, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, "Delivering Massachusetts after its rigorous sea trials is an important milestone commitment for our team this year."

She further highlighted the company's dedication to accelerating submarine production, viewing this delivery as a substantial step toward that goal.

The construction of Massachusetts involved over 10,000 shipbuilders from Newport News Shipbuilding and Electric Boat, alongside thousands of suppliers nationwide, including more than 20 based in Massachusetts.

The nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine was christened in May 2023 at Newport News Shipbuilding by its sponsor, Sheryl Sandberg, founder of Lean In and former chief operating officer of Meta.

Massachusetts is designed to perform a variety of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike warfare, and intelligence gathering.

Its advanced capabilities are expected to significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet.

The successful delivery of Massachusetts underscores the ongoing commitment of Newport News Shipbuilding and its partners to provide the Navy with state-of-the-art vessels that meet the evolving demands of national defense.
