Updates on fishing pier closures and timber pile deterioration |
The Hilton Fishing Pier and the Monitor-Merrimac Overlook Park Fishing Pier in Newport News have been closed since April 2025 due to significant deterioration in their supporting timber piles.
Inspections revealed that short-term repairs would not suffice, necessitating full replacements.
The city awarded a design contract for both piers in November 2025, with plans currently under review for necessary state and federal regulatory approvals.
Construction is slated to begin in October 2026, following the anticipated receipt of permits this fall.
The Hilton Fishing Pier is expected to be completed by October 2027, while the Monitor-Merrimac Overlook Park Fishing Pier is projected for completion in June 2028.
In response to these closures, the city has increased inspection frequency for aging piers, expanded engineering reviews, and is exploring protective technologies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
City Manager Alan K. Archer emphasized, "The safety of our residents and visitors remains our top priority. We understand how important these piers are to the community. While the replacement process takes time, we are committed to rebuilding safe, durable piers and keeping residents informed every step of the way."
Residents and visitors can still enjoy other city piers and waterfront spaces, including those at King-Lincoln Park, Denbigh Park, and the James River Fishing Pier. |
