Costco’s Big Move in Newport News |
Bigger store, more parking, and a new fuel center are on the way near Jefferson and Bland |
If you’ve spent any time at the Jefferson Plaza Costco, you already know the parking situation. Relief is coming. Costco is expanding in Newport News and moving less than two miles down the road to a much larger site.
The retailer is taking over the former Ferguson Enterprises headquarters at Jefferson Avenue and Bland Boulevard. That property has sat mostly quiet since Ferguson relocated to City Center in 2021. Demolition is already underway, making room for a 163,000-square-foot warehouse, about 30,000 square feet larger than the current store.
For shoppers, this is a meaningful upgrade. The new location will include more than 800 parking spaces, which alone should lower blood pressure on busy weekends. A redesigned, members-only fuel center off Bland Boulevard is also part of the plan, built to keep cars moving instead of backing up traffic.
Costco purchased the property for $28 million, and the city is investing up to $3.25 million in nearby road improvements to handle the added traffic. All current employees will transfer to the new location, and the company plans to hire up to 30 additional workers once it opens.
There’s still no official opening date, but progress is visible. Same Costco, fewer headaches. |
