Insights on christopher newport university sailing and the cnu sailing team |
Christopher Newport University (CNU) has announced the discontinuation of its sailing program, citing financial constraints and declining participation.
President William G. Kelly emphasized that, despite stable funding from tuition, fees, and state support, the sport's decreasing engagement and the need for costly fleet upgrades have led to this decision.
He stated that this action follows thorough deliberation and a careful analysis of the university's future needs.
The sailing team has demonstrated remarkable resilience, competing successfully against larger, better-funded programs.
In the 2024-25 season, the women's team qualified for the Women's Fleet Race Nationals for the second consecutive year, finishing 16th at the ICSA Women's Western National Semifinals.
Additionally, four sailors earned ICSA All-Academic Team honors, reflecting their dedication both on and off the water.
Established as a varsity program in 1980, CNU's sailing team has a storied history, including national championship qualifications and individual accolades.
The team's final competition will be the Admirals Cup in New York on April 27, 2025. Following this, CNU will continue to support 21 NCAA sports, along with cheerleading and the Storm Dance Team.
Athletics Director Kyle McMullin expressed that, while the decision is difficult, it is made with the long-term interests of the athletics program in mind.
The university acknowledges the contributions of its sailors and remains committed to providing diverse athletic opportunities for its students. |
