Career Fair in Newport News Virginia Connecting Youth to Local Careers |
Exploring youth job opportunities and workforce development |
The upcoming Career Arts and Wellness Fair in Newport News is set to provide invaluable opportunities for local youth to explore diverse career paths and engage directly with potential employers.
Newport News Shipbuilding, a cornerstone of the region's economy, will be prominently featured at the event, offering on-the-spot hiring and direct pathways into the shipbuilding industry.
Christina Brooks, senior director of the Workforce Council, emphasized the significance of shipbuilding in Hampton Roads, noting that the industry plays a vital role in the local economy.
Beyond shipbuilding, the fair will showcase a variety of industries, including security, welding, and music engineering, aiming to help high school juniors and seniors discover careers that resonate with their interests.
Panel discussions will address alternative routes to success, highlighting that college is not the only path to a fulfilling career. With many young people seeking to avoid student debt, the fair will provide information on trade training programs and apprenticeships that allow individuals to earn while they learn.
Brooks highlighted the benefits of apprenticeships, stating that participants can work full-time, receive payment during their training, and advance within their chosen fields without the burden of student loans.
The Career Arts and Wellness Fair is scheduled for this Thursday at the Brittingham-Midtown Community Center. The event will be divided into two sessions: from 10 a.m. to noon for high school students, and from 2 to 5 p.m. for the general public. |
