apprentice school and shipbuilding jobs opportunities and training

The Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, established in 1919, stands as a cornerstone in training skilled shipbuilders.

Offering tuition-free apprenticeships spanning four to eight years, the school provides hands-on experience in 19 trades, including pipefitting, welding, and electrical work.

Apprentices engage in a 40-hour workweek, receiving compensation for both practical training and academic coursework.

In March 2025, the school celebrated the graduation of 77 apprentices.

Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas addressed the graduates, emphasizing the significance of their technical skills and leadership development.

Kari Wilkinson, President of Newport News Shipbuilding, highlighted the graduates' critical role in national security.

The Apprentice School's commitment to excellence has garnered national recognition.

In May 2023, it was selected for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Apprenticeship Ambassador program, underscoring its dedication to workforce development.

The school also collaborates with local educational institutions to offer advanced academic opportunities.

Through partnerships with Virginia Peninsula Community College and Old Dominion University, apprentices can pursue associate and bachelor's degrees in fields such as engineering and business administration.

For high school seniors aspiring to enter the shipbuilding industry, the Apprentice School provides a clear pathway.

In May 2025, over two dozen seniors accepted offers to begin their careers at Newport News Shipbuilding, either through full-time trade positions or by enrolling in the Apprentice School.

This initiative reflects the school's ongoing efforts to attract and develop the next generation of shipbuilders.

The Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School continues to be a vital institution, equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful careers in shipbuilding.
