Residents of Newport News are increasingly alarmed by the pervasive presence of coal dust in their neighborhoods.
Many report a persistent black residue coating their homes and vehicles, raising serious concerns about air quality and associated respiratory issues.
Community advocate Yugonda Sample-Jones has been particularly vocal, sharing that her son developed asthma requiring nebulizer treatments after their move to the area.
She also notes the constant need to power wash their home and the frequent appearance of black streaks on her white car.
In response to these concerns, a recent environmental justice symposium at Christopher Newport University brought together residents and experts to discuss the impact of coal dust.
During the event, researchers from the University of Virginia's Repair Lab detailed their efforts in placing air quality monitors throughout the community to measure pollution levels.
They emphasized focusing on areas in close proximity to coal facilities to gather accurate data.
The findings from this study are anticipated to be released this summer.
Community leaders, like Lathaniel Kirts of the East End Civic Association, believe the data will validate residents' longstanding concerns about poor air quality.
Armed with this information, the community aims to advocate for stronger ordinances and mitigation strategies to reduce coal dust exposure.
Sample-Jones underscores the community's resolve, stating that they are taking ownership to find solutions and are committed to implementing measures such as wind fences or other barriers to protect residents' health. |
