🚧 Long-Term I-64 Lane Closures Are Here |
The Gist: VDOT began closing the inside lane of I-64 in both directions as early as September 29. The closure stretches from LaSalle Avenue to Denbigh Boulevard. Crews are converting the lane into an Express Lane. More lanes may close overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Some areas could drop to just two travel lanes.
Why It Matters: This isn’t a quick construction closure. The inside lane will stay closed until Express Lanes operations begin. Once open, solo drivers can pay a toll to use the lane. HOV-2+ vehicles can use it toll-free with an E-ZPass Flex. Read More...

🏫 Newport News Schools Could Get New Attendance Zones |
The Gist: Newport News Public Schools is looking at new attendance boundaries as enrollment declines. Some schools have more unused space than others. The goal is to better use buildings and resources across the division. No new boundaries have been approved yet. A final recommendation is expected in January 2027.
Why It Matters: Some Newport News students could eventually be assigned to different schools. Any approved changes could begin in the 2027–28 school year. Families will have opportunities to give feedback before a final plan is considered. Read More...

⚓ Newport News Shipbuilding Had One of Its Biggest Weeks in Recent Memory |
The Gist: Newport News Shipbuilding hit two huge milestones on September 29. The future USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) reached preliminary acceptance. The carrier is now about 99% complete and moved closer to final Navy delivery. That same day, Newport News Shipbuilding received a $5 billion contract to refuel and overhaul the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). The massive overhaul is expected to run through November 2031.
Why It Matters: These are two major carrier projects happening right here in Newport News. The Kennedy is nearing the finish line. The Truman is beginning years of work that will prepare it for the second half of its service life. For Newport News shipbuilders, it means another major chapter of Navy work on the waterfront.
